What is Child Abuse?
Child abuse is a non-accidental injury or pattern of injuries (physical/emotional) suffered by a child. Some instances of child abuse include:

Physical Abuse: severe shaking, beating, burns, human bites, broken bones, strangulation or serious internal injury.

Neglect: withholding of or failure to provide a child with the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care, or attention to hygiene.

Sexual Abuse: exploiting a child for sexual gratification; ranging from exhibitionism and fondling to intercourse and the use of children in the production of pornography.

Emotional Abuse: failure to provide the understanding, warmth, attention, and supervision necessary for a child’s healthy psychological growth.

How can I Prevent Child Abuse
Change Myself . . . How am I doing as a parent? How might I become a better, more loving parent? Make a promise to yourself to learn new ways of parenting by reading or talking with other parents. Learn all you can about non-violent discipline. Learn how to use a "Time-out."

Respect your family members. Be conscious of your tone of voice.

Learn to apologize to your kids when you’re wrong! Make time to play together; turn off the TV and talk to your children. Praise your kids for BEING GOOD, for doing the little things that are taken for granted. Tell your children, "I love you," more often.

Violence teaches violence: Forget about hitting your kids. Make a promise to end all violence towards your children. No hitting, slapping, or corporal punishment.

Kids are hurt by angry parents. You control your own actions. Take deep breaths. Count to 100. Call a friend. Get away from your kids if you feel you’re going to hurt them. If you’re a victim, victimizer, or you suspect child abuse or neglect, call Child Protective Services at 527-4358 and ask for help.

How Can I Be The Best Parent I Can Be
  1. Kids form opinions of themselves through the manner in which you talk to them. Is what they hear POSITIVE?
  2. Set aside special time to spend with each of your children.
  3. "Catch" your kid being GOOD.
  4. Move closer physically to your children. Hold them.
  5. When you and your kids talk, pay attention and look into their eyes.
  6. Share POSITIVE feelings OFTEN.
  7. Avoid saying, "You shouldn’t feel that way." That makes your kid believe his or her feelings are not important or valid.
  8. Through your daily words and action, let your children know they are special.
